Profile

Michael was asked by the University to scope the potential of courses for Sport Ministry and Chaplaincy that lead to establishing The Centre for Sport Spirituality and Religion where he works with Professor Andrew Parker. Mike trained as a geographer and town planner, and after working for the London Borough of Haringey, including planning and rebuilding Wood Green town centre, he moved to the London School of Economics’ Greater London Group to evaluate Transport Organisation in a Great City (Allen & Unwin, 1970). Then he switched to join and lead the Research Unit at the Sports Council where commissioned nearly 500 projects, including a panel programme with the ESRC. He also lead on planning and strategy. After 17 years he moved to head the Institute of Sport Planning and Management at Loughborough University, and after retiring in 2004, joined the University of Gloucestershire to teach sports management and development and (part-time) sports ministry and chaplaincy.

His 12 books, 27 chapters and 25 academic and 40 professional articles and 48 other items reflect his planning sports management and sport and religion interests. He was also active in sport’s two professional bodies, now formed into the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity, to which he is a policy advisor and Companion. He is completing the revision of his (2003) Sport and Social Exclusion (Routledge).
