Sports Placements

Working in partnership with the local and regional sport community is at the heart of the mission for the faculty and we are supported by our local sport and exercise community in providing opportunities for active learning through our placement modules.

All sport students within the faculty may choose placement modules as part of their degree programme. Placements could be for example within a teaching/coaching environment, developmental roles, early years, the fitness industry or other collaborative partners. Some students choose to arrange their own placement through contacts already established.

Placements range from 25-100 hours in length per module, and are spread over a period of 10-24 weeks. The specific hours and activities are flexible and would be negotiated between the placement provider and the student based on the learning outcomes of the module and the placement requirements.

It is expected that by their final year the placement will allow students to support placement providers in delivering or evaluating a specific project or initiative. The placement should involve elements of enquiry/problem based learning with a focus on the ability to engage in reflective practice. Assessments will be based on the placement experience.

Students are supported whilst on placement by tutors and the placement team, and we aim to visit and/or make contact at least once during the placement. All students are given a placement handbook as a guide/workbook for use on placement.

Placements offer the opportunity to put academic study into the context of the workplace, whilst enhancing future employment, and many of our students return to their placement as paid employees.

A CRB check obtained through the University is a pre-requisite for a placement.

"I put a lot into the placement and got a lot out of it.  My coaching performance has greatly improved through actually going out into the community and working with children"
