Education

The University of Gloucestershire has a long and proud tradition of delivering training in education in the county and beyond since 1847.

Times may have changed, but our passion for teaching burns as brightly as ever.

Today we offer a range of initial teacher education (ITE) routes to Qualified Teacher Status. You can choose to study for a BEd Primary degree, or if you already have a first degree you can train to become a primary or secondary teacher by studying our one year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

However you choose to study, you’ll have the chance to gain hands on experience in two or more schools thanks to strong partnerships with more than 250 primary schools and 50 secondary schools. We work closely with them to ensure our programmes are relevant and up to date, while head teachers also advise us on course content and training requirements for new teachers.

The institute has been developing its early years education, and we currently offer a Sure Start Early Years Foundation Degree.

We also offer a range of taught postgraduate programmes leading to master’s degrees for serving teachers.  Whether you work in early years, primary, secondary, FE or HE, you can study for stand-alone post graduate certificate courses (the P.G.Cert.); postgraduate diploma courses (the P.G.Dip.) as well as studying for the master’s degree (the M.Ed).  We have three specialist strands for those studying for the master’s degree and these are: the M.Ed. in Educational Leadership; the M.Ed. in Professional Studies and the M.Ed in Inclusive Education.  Please click here for further information.

Health and Social Care

The institute has gained a reputation for high quality teaching and working in partnership in a wide range of areas.

We strive to meet the needs of employers and stakeholders and deliver flexible work based products from foundation courses to PhDs.

We believe in widening access and participation, and liaise with schools through information sessions, open days and on-campus events. In addition the social work and health programmes take employment-based students from partner agencies, many of whom come from non-traditional academic backgrounds.

Within the institute, research is viewed as integral to the working life of staff, in partnership with local and regional providers of care.

We offer a range of courses to suit a variety of leves, from a our pre-qualifying BSc (Hons) Social Work program which has consistently scored well in the Guardian top-universities for social work rankings to post-qualifying awards, CPD courses allowing NHS staff to develop their potential and part-time top-up route.
