Below is more information about this and the Cartographic Technician’s availability. More information about the Cartographic Technician is available here.
Paper Maps
Summary of what we hold
The University has a large collection of paper maps including various topographic and thematic maps. Any student within the University who requires a map for educational purposes may use these maps but mainly these are available for reference purposes only. If you need to borrow a map please contact the Cartographic Technician. Most of the collection relates to the UK and includes Historic and more modern OS Maps and other maps, including geological and soils maps.
Cataloguing plans and progress
There are currently only paper based catalogues for the maps we hold, but we are in the process of producing an electronic catalogue which will be available in the map room initially. This catalogue may not be complete when it goes live but the aim is to have as much as possible included when it goes live later this accademic year (2008/2009)
How to request paper maps
The request form for printed maps is located here
Paper Map Request Form. Both Students and Staff need to complete this and once completed either email it to me or print it out and put it in the pocket on my door. Please allow at least 48hrs for maps to be made ready. Maps can also be made available during a weekly drop in session in QU024 (Archives/Map Library) without the need to complete a form.
Edina and Digimap Information pages
To get the most up to date OS maps (known as Digimap) or digital versions of Historic OS maps, it is best to use Edina http://www.edina.ac.uk/ . This is accessed via Federation Login Link on the Edina website and uses the University of Gloucestershire network login. Further details on registering for this are found here
Edina Ordnance Survey Digimap Registration.
GIS products
At the University the two main GIS products we use are ArchGIS and Idrisi. Support can be provided for these should you require assistance with doing analysis and producing maps for assignments and dissertations.
Design and other Cartographic Work
In certain circumstances design work can be done or digital maps produced for students, but whether this support is appropriate will be decided on a case by case basis. Please allow at least 2 weeks for this type of work. Part A of the Cartographic Work Request form will need to be completed and any additional data or files will need to be provided prior to a decision being made as to whether this is feasible. The form is available here
