Project Implementation Management System (PIMS) is now established as the University's approved model for the proposal of all income-generating projects.
What is PIMS?
PIMS is the University's system for proposing new project applications. These can include proposals and applications for external work (eg: consultancy), tenders for applied research, and applications for funding. PIMS records all new project submissions and enables the University to have a view of how many projects are tendered, how many are successful, and with whom. In PIMS project managers will find a toolbox of equipment to help them through the project application process.
PIMS was put in place to facilitate both Knowledge Transfer and research activity. It enables project managers to ensure that the resources required for their project are available and that the client and type of activity fits with the campus KT plan. PIMS also ensures that correct costing & pricing methods are used, adequate cover is made for insurance liability and project risk, and that issues such as IP and confidentiality are considered.
What kind of projects?
- Income generating work with external organisations (eg: consultancy)
- Tenders for applied research
- Applications for funding
PIMS does not cover HEFCE funded teaching, non-funded credit-bearing courses or formally registered collaborations for teaching.
PIMS website
This is the home of all of the PIMS tools and support, including the Project Proposal Form which enables costing & pricing. Located here.
Username and password are requested and are the same as you would use for intranet or for logging on to your PC.
Once you have accessed the site, I recommend saving as a Favourite by clicking 'Favourites' / 'Add to Favourites', so that you can access it directly.
PIMS Server
This is the shared server space where all new project proposals are saved, before and after authorisation. It is easiest to access this server if you have it mapped as a drive:
- From your desktop, click the 'My Computer' icon
- Double-Click on the 'Tools' option at the top and select 'Map Network Drive'. This will open the 'Map Network Drive' box.
- In the 'Folder Type' box type \\pknas01\pims$ and select 'Finish'.
The PIMS Server is now accessible from your PC. When you have completed a new Project Proposal Form, save it to this location
Should anyone have any problems with setting these up please contact the Centre for Enterprise & Innovation (CEI):
