
We offer language support for non native speakers in a number of ways:
Through the Language Centre we offer:
- Taught undergraduate modules in English as a foreign language for students at levels 4 and 5.
- Taught sessions for students entering at level 6 and Postgraduate students.
Through the Student Achievement Centre we offer:
- One to one appointments which can be booked through the student achievment website, by email, at the libraries, by staff in CILC and the International Development Centre (IDeC)
- Workshops in language development, writing skills and study skills
Undergraduate Modules at levels 4 and 5
There are four modules available:Two at Level 4 and two at Level 5. You can find information about when these take place in the tables below.
Each module consists of 3 or 4 hours a week, taught in two separate sessions. Each is worth 15 CAT points.
Level 4 modules are for students with an English level between IELTS 5.5 and 6.
EF 4131
This module helps develop skills for report and essay writing. It includes understanding titles, planning, organising ideas and structuring academic writing as well as looking at grammar. vocabulary and tenses.
There are two assessments:
EF 4133
This module helps develop language and specific academic skills in the areas of listening (including lectures), note-taking, reading and group presentations.
There are three assessments:
- A group presentation
- An in class listening examination
- An in class reading examination.

EF 5231
This module helps develop advanced academic writing skills. It includes analysing essay requirements, effective planning and organisation, critical evaluation and editing as well development of grammar, vocabulary and tenses

Taught language support for Level 6 and Postgraduate Students
There are two modules for international students studying Business and Accounting at level level 6. These are BM AC modules and tutors in the Facultywill be able to give you details.
One to one appointments
You can also make a one to one appointment to see a language support tutor to discuss a piece of work you are working on. The tutor can advise you how to improve your written work, but will obviously not rewrite the work for you.
