Placement Test
When you arrive we will give you a test to find out about your level of English. The test includes grammar, vocabulary, listening, reading and writing. We will also interview you to find out about your previous studies and your future plans.
Course Information Pack and Study Booklet
When you arrive we give you a welcome pack which includes information about CILC and the university, as well as advice about living and studying in England.
We will also give you a study booklet, which gives you information about your course and is a record of your assessments and tutorials.
Course Content
Our courses are based around "can do" statements and all courses include:
- Speaking
- Listening
- Writing
- Reading
- Grammar
- Vocabulary
- Pronunciation
- Study Skills
There are "can do" statements for each level and these tell you what we expect students to be able to do by the end of a level. The levels relate to the different Cambridge examinations and to different English language examinations. We will give you a copy of the "can do" statements when we have placed you into a class.
Weekly Programmes
Teachers write weekly programmes and send these out to you to let you know what you will be studying in the week. These tell you the focus of the lesson and the materials you will be using. Each course uses a coursebook as well as other materials.
Lessons
Lessons are student centred and most include pair and group work (where you work with other students in your class) as well as individual work on your own. We expect you to work hard in lessons, but you should also enjoy your lessons.
Progress Tests and Homework
There are regular progress tests on every course. These check the grammar and vocabulary you have studied, as well as skills such as reading and listening. There will also be speaking tasks, for example, giving a short talk or asking a student for information. There is a daily homework and a writing task every week.
One to One Tutorials
You will have two or three individual meetings on your course with one of your teachers. We use these meetings to discuss your progress and to help plan for your future studies.
