Our English for University Study and Pre-sessional courses are for students who need to improve their English before starting an undergraduate or postgraduate course at the University of Gloucestershire.
These courses are designed to help prepare students for academic study. The courses are full time (minimum 20 hours a week) and run throughout the year. The length of the course will depend on your English when you apply and the level you need for your university course. The minimum level of English needed for these courses is B1 or IELTS 4 . The table below shows how long you might need to study based on your English at the beginning of the course.

These are only guidelines please remember that:
- Some people learn more quickly than others
- If your language is very different from English you may need longer that someone from a country with a language similar to English
- It can take time to get used to hearing and speaking English around you
- You should try to use English all the time you are here
- The language level you need for the course is the minimum we ask for
If your level of English is lower than IELTS 4 you should take an intensive General English course before applying for the pre-sessional.
Course Content
The content of the course changes according to the level but all courses include language and vocabulary development as well as development of the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. They also develop study skills necessary for university and also introduce you to university academic culture.
