Cheltenham International Language Centre has been running courses for teachers since the mid 1980's.
We offer the following:
Courses leading to the Cambridge ESOL Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (Cambridge ESOL Celta)
This is an internationally recognised qualification for people with no experience of teaching EFL or teachers with some experience but no formal qualification. You can find more information about this course on our Celta pages here CELTA.
Courses for experienced non native teachers
These courses lead to an in house certificate for CILC. You can find more information about these on the courses for teachers pages on the left.
An undergraduate module in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (SLE 301)
This level III module is worth 30 credits and starts at the beginning of semester 1 and ends at the end of semester 2 . The modules serves as an introduction to teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) and it provides an overview of three areas within TEFL:
- Language Awareness: This includes developing an understanding of grammatical terminology, identification of tenses and analysis of meaning and use.
- Methodology:This includes how to teach language skills (reading, listening, speaking and writing), grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.
- Lesson Planning:This area looks at the relationship between what we teach, how we teach and how this affects the specific lesson types.
Teaching and Learning
As this is an introduction to TEFL, sessions are highly participative and take the form of practical workshops. You are expected to participate in activities in order to develop your own language awareness as well as gain an understanding of different approaches and the rationale behind these. You are expected to attend the weekly sessions , not just because they help prepare you for the assessments, but because we hope they are both challenging and enjoyable.
Module Assessments
There are three assessments all of which are coursework based.
- Language Awareness Task (30%)
- One to One (40%)
- Skills Lesson (30%).
The assessments link to the sessions. They may take a different form to other assessments you have completed at the university.
Certification and Employability
Although this module does not lead to a professional qualification in TEFL, students who pass the module will receive an in house certificate in TEFL from CILC. There may also be an opportunity for suitable candidates to take a course leading to the Cambridge ESOL Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (CELTA) in June/July.
