Your accommodation and where you live during your studies will play a big part in your life and overall experience whilst studying at the university. The information included is this leaflet should give you all the information you need to find suitable accommodation.
There are three main types of accommodation:
- University Registered Lodgings
- University Registered Housing
- Halls of Residence
University Registered Lodgings
Our Housing Support Team keep a list of lodgings for students looking for somewhere quiet, safe and of good quality to live.
In lodgings you let an individual study bedroom and share the communal facilities (kitchen, lounge and bathroom) with the resident landlord/lady and possibly their family. This is a flexible option as there is no legal tenancy so can be a good option for students only staying part of the year or wanting to move somewhere else. These houses also tend to be quieter as you would not usually be sharing with other students.
You can expect to pay approximately £65-£85 per week for self catering and £90-£110 per week for half board (breakfast and evening meal); both price ranges will be inclusive of utility bills but you may have to pay extra to use the telephone and internet. You will have your own study bedroom, furnished with a bed, desk, chair, wardrobe, chest of drawers and shelving.

University Registered Housing
Our Housing Support Team has a database of properties on the University Registration Scheme. Landlords register their properties which are then viewed by our Housing Support Team to make sure they meet our health and safety standards. The landlord does not live in the property and you would share with other students. The average rent for self-catered housing is £60-£80 per room, per week (not including bills), and £80 -£100 including bills
If you take a place in a house with UK undergraduate students you may find they have very different lifestyles and noise and tidiness can often be an issue. If you have signed a contract you will still legally have to pay rent within the property even if you want to move out, so think carefully about who you are sharing with before you accept a room and sign a contract. Halls of Residence
Halls of Residence are managed by the University and are based in and around our main campuses. Rooms are let on a 40 week fixed term basis, from 16th September 2012 – 23rd June 2013. Rent includes all utility bills (water, heating, electric, gas & internet) and basic contents insurance cover. The halls are self-catered so you will need to cook for yourself. Kitchens are equipped with an oven, fridge, freezer, microwave, toaster and kettle. No bedding or kitchen utensils are provided in halls of residence, although these can be purchased locally. Communal areas are shared with other university students. Some rooms include private bathroom facilities.
There is a robust residential support service in place for you. This support includes a 24 hour on call Security and a Residential Assistant who is a returning student that lives in halls specifically to offer you support.
Level 1 undergraduate students who have firmly accepted an offer of a place to study at the university, are guaranteed a room in halls of residence it they complete an accommodation application form by 13th August 2012. If you apply after this date, a room will not be available. You will then receive a room offer via email from June 2012. You will need to electronically sign this contract and pay a booking fee of £200. This amount will be credited against your final instalment of rent. Any damages caused during your stay will be charged separately. You can either pay your accommodation costs for the full academic year from your country or when you arrive at the university, or you can pay in three instalments by direct debit from your UK bank account.

Temporary accommodation
Other than University Halls of Residence we do not advise you commit to any form of private accommodation without viewing the property and reading the tenancy agreement. If you wish to make your own arrangements we recommend you arrive a few days early to give yourself time to arrange viewings and go over the agreement.

Local letting agents
Would you like to look at Housing that’s not on our list? Request a Letting Agents list from the Accommodation Office.
Please note that letting agents are not affiliated with the university and often charge administration fees on top of your rent and deposit. It is vital that you have a list of charges you will have to pay prior to signing any agreements or paying any money.
You must also be sure to have any correspondence from a letting agent in writing, verbal communication is not adequate.
House Hunting Event
There will be a House Hunting event taking place during your International Welcome Week in September. So if you haven’t found accommodation by that time we will be there to help you. However, we would stress that options would be limited so we strongly recommend that you start looking for suitable accommodation before arrival.
To book your place on the International Welcome Week email internationalstudents@glos.ac.uk. To find out more see the International Applicant Guide included in this pack.
