International Postgraduate Accommodation

When you have decided to come to the University of Gloucestershire it is important to make arrangements for accommodation as soon as you can. Please read through all the information here to see what housing best meets your needs.  Whether it’s living in University managed housing, lodging with a landlord or sharing with other students in private housing there is plenty of choice.

Postgraduate Halls of Residence
The university provides a limited number of halls rooms exclusively for international postgraduate students which we can allocate to you before you arrive in the UK.

You will be renting an individual study bedroom with en suite bathroom facilities while sharing a kitchen with other postgraduate students.

These halls are located in a very desirable area of Cheltenham close to the town centre, numerous shops, the Park Campus and main transport links.

Rooms are let on a 40 week fixed term basis, from 16th September 2012 – 23rd June 2013 at a cost of £109 per week (£4360 in total). There will be an option to extend your contact during the Summer 2013 period at the reduced rate of £90 per week. Rent includes all utility bills (water, heating, electric, gas & internet) and basic contents insurance cover. The halls are self-catered so you will need to cook for yourself.  Kitchens are equipped with an oven, fridge, freezer, microwave, toaster and kettle. Bed packs (duvet and two pillows) are available at an extra cost.

There is a robust residential support service in place for you. This support includes a 24 hour on call Security and a Residential Assistant who is a returning student that lives in halls specifically to offer you support.

To book this type of accommodation you should be in receipt of an unconditional offer to study at the university.  Please note that rooms will be allocated on a first come first served basis so it is advisable to apply as early as possible. Room offers will be sent via email from June 2012. When an offer of a room is made you will be required to make a payment of £200 to confirm your acceptance of this offer.  This amount will be credited against your final instalment of rent.  Any damages caused during your stay will be charged separately.

University Registered Lodgings
Our Housing Support Team keep a list of lodgings for students looking for somewhere quiet, safe and of good quality to live.

In lodgings you let an individual study bedroom and share the communal facilities (kitchen, lounge, bathroom) with the resident landlord/lady and possibly their family.  This is a flexible option as there is no legal tenancy so can be a good option for students only staying part of the year or wanting to move somewhere else.  These houses also tend to be quieter as you would not usually be sharing with other students.

You can expect to pay approximately £65-£85 per week for self catering and £90-£110 per week for half board (breakfast and evening meal); both price ranges will be inclusive of utility bills but you may have to pay extra to use the telephone and internet.   You will have your own study bedroom, furnished with a bed, desk, chair, wardrobe, chest of drawers and shelving. Find more information here

University Registered Housing
Our Housing Support Team has a database of properties on the University Registration Scheme. Landlord’s register their properties which are then viewed by our Housing Support Team to make sure they meet our health & safety standards. The landlord does not live in the property and you would share with other students. The current (2011-2012) average rent for self-catered housing is £65-£85 per room, per week (not including bills), and £80 -£100 including bills

If you take a place in a house with home undergraduate students you may find they have very different lifestyles and noise and tidiness can often be an issue.  If you have signed a contract you will still legally have to pay rent within the property even if you want to move out, so think carefully about who you are sharing with before you accept a room and sign a contract. Most of our postgraduate students prefer to live with other postgraduate students – there will be plenty of opportunity to meet people to live with at the Welcome Event.Find out more information here

Temporary Accommodation
Other than University Postgraduate Halls of Residence we do not advise you commit to any form of private accommodation without viewing the property and reading the tenancy agreement. If you wish to make your own arrangements we recommend you arrive a few days early to give yourself time to arrange viewings and go over the agreement.

Local Bed & Breakfast accommodation, including hotels. For this type of accommodation you can contact the local tourist office, or click on the following link, http://www.visitcheltenham.com

Local Letting Agents
Would you like to look at Housing that’s not on our list? Request a Letting Agents list from the Accommodation Office.

Letting agents often charge administration fees on top of your rent and deposit.  It is vital that you have a list of charges you will have to pay prior to signing any agreements or paying any money.

You must also be sure to have any correspondence from a letting agent in writing, verbal communication is not adequate.

House Hunting Event
There will be a House Hunting event taking place during your International Welcome Week in September. So if you haven’t found accommodation by that time we will be there to help you. However, we would stress that options would be limited so we strongly recommend that you start looking for suitable accommodation before arrival.

To book your place on the International Welcome Week email internationalstudents@glos.ac.uk. To find out more see the International Applicant Guide included in this pack.
