Is it for me?
If you are worried, or something is causing you distress, you can arrange an initial appointment to clarify whether counselling might be helpful
Counselling provides an opportunity to talk about what ever difficulty you may have and to look at your concerns from a different perspective.
If after talking together it seems that some other form of help might be more appropriate, we can think about how to find alternative help.
How will it help?
By talking through your problems or concerns with a counsellor, you may deepen your understanding and develop alternative ways of dealing with the situation.
What can I expect?
Your initial appointment will give you the opportunity to talk about your particular issues and discuss whether further sessions would be helpful. The number of sessions will vary depending on your needs. Some people find that 4-6 sessions are sufficient in order for them to feel more in control of their life, others may prefer to meet more often. Usually we would agree to meet for a set number of sessions once a week. Each session lasts 50 minutes.
Do you keep records?
Yes.
The Counselling Service complies with the Data Protection Act, 1998. The Act requires us to obtain a client’s consent for records to be kept. If you do not agree to notes being made, only one session can be offered. In this session the counsellor will explain why ongoing counselling cannot continue.
Basic statistical information is recorded about each contact made. This information is analysed and summarised in our Annual Report. Individuals are not identified in these reports or in any public account of the work of the Service.
Individual Counsellors keep written memory notes of counselling sessions as part of good professional practice. These records comply with the Counsellors Professional Guidelines and Ethical Codes and are strictly confidential to the Service. The notes are kept securely in locked filing cabinets.
