Harassment Contacts

The common image of harassment is bullying in the school playground, but we realise that it can happen at University as well.  It can be amongst students, staff to student, or student to staff.  It is rare, but is taken very seriously by the University.

What is harassment?

Unwanted conduct which has the purpose or effect of violating that other person's dignity, or creating an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment for her/him.

This could be verbal abuse, physical abuse, sexual innuendo, malicious rumours, offensive text messages, etc.

We were only having a laugh…

Harassment is determined by the person who experiences it.  You may think it was all a bit of a joke, but it may have caused offence to someone without you even realising it.  Indirect harassment is just as unacceptable as targeted harassment.  Be aware of the possible offence you could cause to those around you by your words and actions.

If you feel harassed, or think that someone is bullying you; talk to someone.  You can talk to your friends, family, someone from Student Services, Human Resources, someone from the Students’ Union or your own union representative.

The University has a team of Harassment Contacts who can act as a first point of contact to talk through the issues confidentially.  They can advise you on the University’s Harassment Procedures and support you through them if you would like.

Other University and external organisations are also available to helpif you feel you are being harassed or are looking for further information.

The University is committed to eliminating harassment, but can only address things if we know about them.  Don’t let it continue; help us to stop it.

The following guidance gives more information on different forms of harassment, and the University's procedures on addressing harassment.
