Student Loans

Government student loans are available to help with the cost of fees and living costs.  You must apply for these loans each year.

Fee loans
Cover the cost of your fees for each academic year.  These loans are non means tested; this means that the income of your household is not taken into account. These loans are available to home and EU students and are paid to the University directly.

Please note that EU students are, in the majority of cases, only eligible for the fee loan.  However, if certain criteria are met some EU students could also be eligible for the maintenance loan and grants.  For more detailed information visit www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance-eu

Maintenance Loans
Help towards your general living costs while you study.  The majority of this loan will not depend on household income.  This means that you will be eligible for a basic entitlement regardless of income.  However, this will depend on your year of entry i.e. 72% for 2011 entrants and 65% for 2012 entrants.  For more detailed information on loan rates visit www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance

This loan is paid to you in three equal instalments over the academic year - one instalment at the beginning of each term.

Repaying student loans
You do not have to repay student loans until you have finished your course and you are earning above a certain threshold.

Interest will start accruing as soon as your first loan instalment is paid to you or at the time your fee loan is paid to the University.

The current income threshold for repayment is £15,000.  This means that students do not start repaying loans until they are earning above this threshold.  At which point you will repay 9% of what you earn over the income threshold. In short, if you are earning £18,000 gross then your monthly repayment will be £22 regardless of the size of the loan debt.

Repayments will be calculated on what you earn and not on what you owe.

For 2012/13 entrants, the income threshold for repayment will be £21,000.  Same principle as above – 9%  above  £21,000. So, if you are earning £25,000 gross then your monthly repayment will be £30 regardless of the size of the loan debt.

Outstanding loan debts will be written off after 25 years for students starting their course before 2012 and 30 years for 2012/13 entrants.

Students must apply for loans and grants every year. To apply for loans and for more detailed information on loans; repayments and interest rates please click on this link www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance

Grants

Grants are available to certain students and are to help with living costs.  The good news is that grants are non repayable. Apart from the Disabled Students’ Allowances, grants are means tested on household income. Grants are paid in three equal instalments over the academic year – one instalment at the start of each term.

Maintenance grant or living cost grant
Depending on your year of entry the household income threshold for this grant may vary.

Year of Entry

Income Threshold

Maximum Grant

2010/11 & 2011/12

£50,020

£2906

2012/13

£42,600

£3250

The lower the income, the more grant is available to you.  You will receive the maximum grant if your income is below £25,000.

If you qualify for Income Support or Housing Benefit then you can be assessed for the Special Support Grant instead of the Maintenance Grant.  The Special Support Grant will not be counted as income for benefits purposes.

Dependants’ grants
Extra support is available for students who have child or adult dependants. There is a Childcare Grant; an Adult Dependants’ Grant and a Parents’ Learning Allowance.

Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSA)
Non income assessed support is available to full and part time undergraduate students.

Students must apply for loans and grants every year. For more information and to apply for grants please click on this link  www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance
