Quotations and Recommendations

Here are some comments from students, staff and members of the community who have been members of the University and Community choir, Chamber orchestra, Musical Theatre productions, or who have been studying music at some level for either fun or for a musical qualification with Ian Higginson at the University.

Music Lessons

"Lessons with Ian were always very positive. He explained everything clearly and had some great methods for teaching difficult techniques and pieces. I always felt encouraged after each lesson."
Student and successful Diploma candidate

'Music lessons at the University of Gloucestershire have been one of the main highlights of my three years at university as it has meant that I have been able to continue developing my love for music whilst studying Psychology. Ian Higginson’s great passion, enthusiasm and sense of humour during lessons made both learning and performing fun and enjoyable. With his caring attitude and reasonable prices Ian has the ability to bring out the musical talent in every student he teaches no matter what their ability and helps them to realise their true potential.'

'Lessons with Ian are always a pleasure! His teaching is relaxed and fun yet extremely professional and it's great to know your teacher really does know what he is talking about. Ian not only teaches you how to improve vocally but how to develop as a musician who can listen and teach themselves too.'

'The music tuition is excellent. Being taught by someone who is inspirational and supportive, make as all the difference to my musical experience here at the University.'
University member of staff currently studying for a diploma in Musical Theatre Singing

"Singing is really important to me and one of the reasons I came to this university. The one on one lessons I have are vital and have helped me with my singing technique and confidence with performing."
'Having done a lot of choral recitals and some solos as a scholar, I asked Ian if he could help me reach my goal to achieve a diploma in singing before I graduate this year. He was very enthusiastic to help me and gave me a lot of encouragement, making me feel valued and helping me to stay motivated through his fun approach to teaching. I took the diploma at the end of June and have since learnt that I passed with flying colours. I am in no doubt certain this is due to Ian’s encouragement and would recommend him as a teacher to others. I further recognise that there is a lack of music teachers with his level of teaching ability in the county, especially for vocal training, making him even more special. I hope to continue studying with Ian after I graduate and hope that many others can benefit from his generosity and commitment to music at the university in the future.'

Musical Theatre Preconditions

'Taking part in musical theatre at the University of Gloucestershire has to be one of the most memorable moments of my time at University. Enabling me to take a break from my studies, relax and try something new musical theatre for me was a great way of meeting new people, having fun and making friends for life, it enabled me to gain confidence within myself whilst developing new skills along the way.  Seeing such a talented group of people of all abilities come together, with the musical expertise of Ian Higginson, hilariously funny and professional musical productions have been achieved, producing many wonderful memories along the way.'

University and Community Choir

'Ian is a very dynamic choir leader and rehearsals are always driven yet fun too! Ian makes it possible for the University Choir to performs a wide variety of musical styles, bringing out the best in the choir whatever the musical genre.'
Student, Choral Scholar and successful Diploma candidate

'I joined the university choir in September 2006 having talked to an encouraging Ian on the phone. This was pivotal in my decision to come to Cheltenham for my university course as I learnt that I could continue my music alongside my studies. Ian has been a fun and friendly choir master choosing a wide repertoire for the group with a mixture of genres including some very fun pieces and this has kept all levels interested. His commitment to the choir and individual students is outstanding and he deserves a great deal of recognition for his services to the university in terms of musical achievement. As a scholar I have had extra opportunities to perform in recitals and also assisted in corporate things such as open days all of these have been orchestrated by Ian and show the extra mile that he goes to promote and demonstrate music at the university.'

'The University Choir is the best thing I have done at university. The people are wonderful, we work hard but the sound that we all make is truly remarkable. I recommend people to join the choir as a way of meeting new likeminded people who enjoy music- making.'

'Consisting of both students and community members the University choir is a fun and enthusiastic group of people of all abilities who are there to make music and have a laugh at the same time. With their energetic musical director - Ian Higginson the choir enjoys rehearsing regularly and has had the privilege of performing in venue's such as Bath Abbey and Worcester Cathedral. Being part of the University choir is a great way to gain confidence, try something new and make friends with people from different courses and within the community.'
Ex-student member of the choir

'After so many years I never thought I would sing in a choir again. Joining the University and Community Choir has brought back all the enjoyment and fun of being part of a musical group again.'
Ex-student member of the choir

'The University and Community Choir has given me the opportunity to sing a variety of musical styles in locations ranging from Cheltenham Racecourse to Gloucester Cathedral. There cannot be many choirs who can claim to have performed Christmas carols in a Chapel whilst being accompanied by a bagpiper in full regimental dress! The rehearsals are conducted in an informal, yet professional manner and are are great way to meet students, members of staff and people from the local community. I joined the choir not having any experience of choral singing, and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys singing but who has not found an appropriate outlet for their talent.'

University and Community Chamber Orchestra

The University and Community Orchestra is a great way to meet new people and play some interesting music. It is really exciting playing in the concerts because you get a good thrill from it. All the rehearsing becomes worthwhile and it gives a wonderful feeling that you have achieved something significant.'
Ex-student and now community  member of the Orchestra

'The integration from the University and the local community creates a high standard of music making in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.'
Ex-community member of the orchestra

'We've really enjoyed being part of the orchestra. Different ages and abilities have come together to play brilliantly.'
Ex-student members of the orchestra

'Brilliant fun, great music, great people, great fun - on a Tuesday evening.'
Ex-community member of the orchestra

'Everyone enjoys playing in the orchestra: The weekly rehearsals are hard work but good fun - Ian has a professional approach, but a light touch! We put on two or three concerts each year, attracting a good sized audience who appreciate the mix of 18th - 20th century music and our concerts are always well received. We appreciate the post-performance trips to local bars and restaurants too.'
Community member of the orchestra

'I joined as an inexperienced 2nd violin and not knowing what to expect. I have really enjoyed it and found that Ian and the members are very helpful, friendly and quickly make you feel part of the team. I also find that the music is fantastic and varied. I was worried that I would be too slow to learn the music well but I have found that the rehearsals give me ample opportunity to learn the tricky bits! What a fun way to spend an evening and improve my playing at the same time'.
Community member of the orchestra

'A warm, friendly and relaxed atmosphere in which to learn new music and play familiar pieces. As well as the playing side there are many social events to take part in throughout the year.'
