Historic and Contemporary Landscapes

This summer school  provides an introduction to the profession of landscape architecture, through a field study week and lecture series that explore historical & contemporary issues that have influenced the development of landscapes & gardens in urban and rural areas throughout the UK & around the world. Examples range from paradise gardens to twenty first-century urbanisation; landscape gardeners to chartered landscape architect. You will explore the concept of bounded & boundless spaces; public & private space;  the philosophies of notable designers as well as site art, architectural & design movements in order to evaluate the success of a range of historic & contemporary landscape spaces.

Field classes will involve preparatory tuition, introductory lectures and study visits to historic & contemporary gardens & landscapes with 'follow-up' sessions for evaluation reflection and independent and/or group project assessment work.
