Professional Practice and Education

Professional Practice

Millions of people worldwide refer to themselves as professionals they include the leaders and the decision-makers that shape our world. They are potential agents of change who, by introducing sustainable development principles into their practice, can make a major contribution towards achieving a sustainable future.

Continuing professional development is something most professionals engage with in either a formal or informal way in order to update their knowledge and skills. For those professionals who belong to the numerous professional institutions their practice may be influenced by accreditation frameworks or continuing professional development provided by their institution(s).

Our Research Focus

The IRIS research stream in professional practice and education is concerned with the all aspects of how professionals access and experience education for sustainable development and how they integrate it into their professional practice. This covers both the initial training of professionals and continued education. It includes the monitoring and evaluation of existing programmes as well as the development of new initiatives. Therefore it has a particular interest in education and training professional involved in the delivery of ESD as well as those professionals who experience ESD in sectors as diverse as construction, engineering, financial services, procurement energy, water and waste management.
