Organisational Change for Sustainability: Learning from Experiences

4-5 November 2011, University of Gloucestershire

Are you interested in catalysing change for sustainability

in your organisation?

Embedding sustainability at the core of organisations is complex and multi-faceted. Catalysing wide scale shifts in current systems and practice, thinking systemically, and involving key stakeholders in learning processes, are some of the challenges which different institutions are currently facing.

This two-day UNU RCE event will introduce you to the most innovative practices in the art of transforming institutions towards sustainability. It provides the opportunity to collaboratively reflect on and share the learning, achievements and challenges of influencing and facilitating change for sustainability within an organisation. You will learn from the experiences of two key respected leaders who have successfully played the change agent role in their institutions.  The sessions will focus around the following questions:

Q. What are the frameworks which can guide practice in organisational change for   sustainability?
Q. What is the role of leadership in catalysing change for sustainability?
Q. How can I become a successful institutional change agent for sustainability?
Q. How can I overcome obstacles and resistance to change for sustainability?
Q. Which stakeholders do I need to engage to drive change for sustainability in my organisation?
Q. What approaches are already working and what are the most innovative practices in this area?

The event is relevant to those engaged in change for sustainability in the higher and further education, business, public, health and non-governmental sectors.

The Nine Elements of a Sustainable Campus

By Mitch Thomashow

University of Gloucestershire, Fullwood House, FW015a&b, Park  Campus, Cheltenham, GL50 2RH

This participatory workshop introduces a comprehensive, hands-on approach for transforming campuses into sustainable learning environments. The nine elements are organised around three campus functions: Infrastructure (energy, food, materials), Community (governance, investment, wellness), and Learning (curriculum, interpretation, aesthetics). The workshop includes two phases, a presentation of the nine elements scheme, and a networking, collaborative discussion enabling participants to compare their experiences using the scheme. The presentation demonstrates how all of these nine elements are interconnected, salient, and dynamic. The discussion entails a problem-solving orientation.
